About 20 percent of America's oil and gas reserves are located within Midland's petroleum-producing region known as the Permian Basin. Located 20 mi (32 km) southwest of Midland is its twin town of Odessa. Because of the close proximity of both Midland and Odessa, amenities such as the Midland International Airport and the EZ Rider public transportation system are shared by the residents of both towns. Visitors are attracted to Midland for its numerous museums exhibiting West Texas heritage and history, including the American Airpower Heritage Museum, the Midland Downtown Lions Club Fire Museum, the Museum of the Southwest and the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. The town also features the public Hogan Park Golf Course, the First American Bank Ballpark, Midland College and the Summer Lawn Concert Series. Midland's heroism attracted national attention in 1987 with the successful, 58-hour rescue of Baby Jessica McClure from an abandoned well.
